About
Horse Trekking - Day
$30 a day
Please note: we do not provide horses.
This is a working farm so you will be amongst sheep and cattle, please ensure gates are left as they are found.
There is wildlife on the property as well as 3 baited (will have carcasses in them) pig traps to help control the population, if you see any animals that are dead or suffering, please notify us.
Track Details
Lockharts is 607 hectares with a variety ranging from flats, sloping hills and steep climbs, a reasonable level of fitness is advised, the best views are at the top of a hill!
Shoes are recommended unless your horse is very tough footed as there are riverbed crossings.
We have 3 main tracks, all will have gateways which will be expected to be left the way they were found. There are creeks along the tracks for your horse to have a drink. There is no power on any of the fences on the property.
Yellow Track - You will start your ride at Lockharts following this track to get to the hut. This is approximately an hours ride following a 4WD drive track with riverbed crossings. This track is also suitable for heavy wagons as this track was used in the 2021 Cavalcade.
This track is approx. 3.5km
Green Track – This is the popular “Lockharts Loop”. This track takes you around the back of the farm and follows the boundary all the way to the front of the property, you then hook back onto the Yellow Track which takes you from the yard to the hut. This track is relatively easy with a couple of steeper inclines and would be suitable for advanced beginners onwards.
The Green Track is 8.5km and when joined with the Yellow Track to do the full loop it totals at 12km
Orange Track – This track is best suited to the experienced trekker with a fit horse. With steep hills and rocky ridges in parts, where you would be required to dismount and lead your horse, it’s a good test of riding skills but in return you get amazing views of the Port Hills and Mt Dobson, with the track taking you up to 800m above sea level.
On top of these tracks you have the option to more “free roam” as well where you can follow your nose and explore the property. You can also find a creek for a wee splash in, close to the hut.
The map can be viewed in the photos.
Horse Accommodation
If arriving late the evening/night before the planned ride and there isn’t enough time to ride to the hut, there is the option of leaving horses in the post and rail sheep yards, located in the main yard where you will park up your floats and trucks. You would then travel to the hut via 4WD, to come back in the morning. Or else there is the option to set up base at the main entrance yards, but you must be fully self contained as there is no facilities here. You will need to bring water buckets for your horses and water as well.
At Lockharts Hut, there are sheep yards that can be used for holding horses, these are made out of sheep netting and rails, and DO NOT have Water, so you will need to bring buckets and bucket water from the creek.
There is also two large holding paddocks available for holding horses, which are roughly 1Ha with creeks that are suitable to wash horses down and fill up buckets. There is grass in the yards and holding paddocks, but we cannot guarantee this will be enough for your horse, so highly recommend bringing your own hay and feed. None of the fences will have power so if you wish to tape your horses in a smaller area you will need to bring your own fencing gear and portable fence unit.
If you are staying overnight at the Hut, we recommend bringing a water bucket, horse feed and cover to keep your horse comfortable.
Please kick and spread any horse poo around
Vehicle Access
4WD only to reach the hut. Horse Trucks and 2WD vehicles can easily park up in or around the yards, but can go no further. Horses will need to be unloaded by the yards at the entrance to the property and floats left here.
We are happy for a 4WD to meet at the hut with lunch or gear by ONLY driving up and back on the valley floor. This will require an experienced driver.
Please note if you get stuck there will be a charge to pull you out, and it could be up to a 1.5 hour walk to get help. Do not over estimate your skill.
Alternatively, we may be able to help with transport to the Hut via prior arrangement for $20
